The Artist

CJ Miyamoto is a painter whose practice moves between observation and omission. Working primarily with oil and watercolor, he approaches painting not as a means of explanation, but as a way of registering presence — what remains visible when clarity is deliberately withheld.
His work resists the complete description of form. Figures and spaces often emerge through restraint rather than accumulation, suspended between recognition and disappearance. This economy of means is not an absence of skill, but a conscious decision to prioritize perception over resolution, allowing meaning to arise from atmosphere, gesture, and spatial tension rather than narrative certainty.
Miyamoto’s technical foundation includes highly refined portraiture, where realism, control, and surface resolution are fully exercised when the work demands it. In contrast, his authorial pieces intentionally depart from finish, favoring compression, ambiguity, and selective focus. This oscillation between precision and restraint defines his visual language and affirms that looseness, in his work, is a choice rather than a limitation.
My originals intentionally resist full resolution. What appears unfinished is the result of conscious omission, not process interruption. By limiting clarity, the painting preserves tension, allowing the viewer’s perception to complete what the image refuses to explain.
Rather than aligning with transient visual trends, Miyamoto’s paintings seek durability — works meant to be lived with, returned to, and reinterpreted over time. They do not aim to summarize the present moment, but to quietly record how it feels to stand within it.
